William Akers Martin

Born in Patrick County on May 6, 1921, he was a son of the late Mallie G. Martin and Ada Martin Martin. Also preceding him in death was his step-mother, Dora Craig Martin.

He retired from American Furniture Company after 35 years of service, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was an avid chain saw competitor and entered many contests to help raise funds for local volunteer fire departments winning numerous trophies right up to 2010. He also loved the outdoors, feeding the birds and squirrels, mowing and gardening, and loved his 2 cats Fluffy and Princess.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Ollie H. Martin, a sister, Della Mae Craig of Bassett, half-sister, Marie Blackwell of Martinsville, half-brother, Leonard C. Martin of Bassett, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 10, 2011, from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. in the Bassett Chapel of Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 6:00 P.M. with Pastor Grover Guynn officiating. A crypt side service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 11, 2011, at Henry Memorial Park.
