Al grew up in Baton Rouge and built a life defined by resilience, determination, and deep devotion to the people he loved. He earned his Vo Tech pipefitter certification and later shared his knowledge by teaching others entering the trade. Over the years, he pursued several entrepreneurial endeavors, but he often said that his most rewarding professional experience was his 11 years with the AC Lewis YMCA, where he found a second family and a community that meant the world to him.
Al’s life was marked by extraordinary perseverance. He celebrated his sobriety beginning July 11, 2006, an achievement he cherished and protected for nearly two decades. His commitment to recovery extended far beyond his own journey; he sponsored and supported many others in finding and maintaining their sobriety, offering guidance, encouragement, and hope to those walking the same difficult path.
Through the years, he faced a series of serious medical battles with remarkable strength. Despite his own suffering, Al always ensured others, particularly his wife, were well cared for and supported. Through every setback, he fought on with quiet courage and unwavering faith.
Al is preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey and Francis Smith; brother, Benny Smith; mother and father-in-law Lurline and Joel Hilbun; and brother-in-law, Randy McBeath.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, and sole caregiver during his illness, Kaye Smith; his daughters Stephanie Rojas (Elizabeth), Michelle Callendar (Ryan), Katie Smith (Reed), and Lindsey Liles (Shane); and his sister, Sherry McBeath. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren—Taylor, Lexi, Lundyn, Will, Alexander, Nora, Clara, and Myra, and many nieces and nephews.
Al loved spending time with his family and especially cherished moments with his grandchildren. He loved spending many weekends at his camp saltwater fishing; a place where he found peace and joy. He was also a devoted New Orleans Saints fan, cheering them on through every season with unwavering loyalty. His family will forever admire his strength, cherish his humor, and carry forward the lessons he taught through the way he lived: perseverance, gratitude, and the importance of showing up for the people you love.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center or the AC Lewis YMCA, organizations that played meaningful roles in Al’s life and care.
The family would like to thank Al’s many providers over the years, Dr. Andy Dalovisio, Dr. Catherine O’Neal, Dr. Robert Hosse, Dr. Lauren Zatarain, and Amedisys Hospice.
A celebration of Al’s life will be held on Friday, March 13, at Greenoaks Funeral Home. Visitation will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with services beginning at 2:00 p.m.
