Alleen Thompson Griffin, 92, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2022, at home and with her daughter by her side. Alleen was born in Birmingham, AL on September 3, 1929 to William Lynn Thompson and Marie Alleen Slade Thompson. After spending her childhood in many different areas of Louisiana, she graduated from Southeastern University in 1950 and went on to receive her master’s degree in Library Science from Louisiana State University in 1953. While at LSU, she also became a member of Pi Beta Phi. Alleen was a teacher first before starting her career as a librarian in Alexandria, LA where she got to drive the bookmobile. The majority of her working years were spent as a school librarian at Audubon Elementary, and she retired from the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in 1992. She met her husband Jack L. Griffin on a blind date in Houston, TX. Jack and Alleen were married in 1959, and they moved to Baton Rouge, LA in 1963, becoming members of the Broadmoor Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed a good cup of black coffee, reading about American history and collecting antiques, and spending time with her family. Alleen loved traveling with her best friend and sister Marilynn Young who passed away in 2015, and she looked forward to annual beach trips and reunions with extended family. She was compassionate, gracious, and genuinely caring, and her generosity extended to many different charitable organizations. Alleen was very involved with her grandchildren and actively supported their education and extracurricular activities for which they will be forever grateful.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by her daughter Susan (John “Casey”) Thornton; grandchildren John (Jaclyn), Elizabeth, and Andrew Thornton; and by her great-granddaughter Abigail Thornton.
Visitation will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, January 21 at Greenoaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, LA followed by a memorial service at 2:00pm.
