

Annette Barbara Hale Burns passed away on January 26, 2016, at 1:25 PM surrounded by her loving family. She was a remarkable, intelligent and thoughtful woman who made a big impact on her friends and family. She was also a voracious reader and she shared her love of books with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Annette was a retired Registered Nurse who worked at the Council on Aging, where she helped to implement the Meals on Wheels program. She worked her last 20 years for the State of Louisiana as an advocate for patients in nursing homes and group homes throughout the state. Annette was born in New Orleans on January 16, 1931, and attended school at McDonogh 28, Ursuline Academy and the Touro School of Nursing. She is survived by her sister, Jeanne Shepherd, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was married to John Francis Burns and that union produced four children and their spouses, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Her children and their spouses are John and Lisa Burns, Elizabeth Burns and Todd Kenyon, Martha and Kevin Bourgeois, Patrick and Genevieve Burns. Her grandchildren are Mary Katherine Burns Jackson (Stephen), Allison Burns Selig (Robert), and Aaron Francis Bourgeois and great-grandchildren include Anna Claire Jackson and Eloise Larkin Selig. She will be missed by her beloved cats Darla and Princess. Annette was preceded in death by her former husband, John Francis Burns; her parents, Albert Blake and Emma Willie Hale; her sister, Mary Schroeder; a brother, William Hale; as well as her very special friend, Walter Kuzmich. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 1, 2016, at 2:00 PM in the Aldrich Chapel at First United Methodist Church, Baton Rouge, with visitation beginning at noon. A celebration of her life to be held at the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge will be announced at a later date. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the MICU at Our Lady of the Lake hospital for its compassionate care during this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the East Baton Rouge Parish Library.
