"Bobbye Jean Crawford Mays left us at the age of 87 to join her husband and love of her life, Avera Longstreet Mays, on August 26, 2017 at 9:02 am. She was born January 16, 1930 in the Tennessee Community near Tenaha, Texas. She attended first grade in New London at the time of the big gas explosion and graduated from Hawkins High School in 1947. While attending college at the University of Texas in Austin, she met Avera of West Columbia, Texas. They married on June 4, 1950 at the Methodist Church and started married life in Houston, followed by Corpus Christi, and finally Baton Rouge in 1959. They were blessed with 3 daughters and a son: Kayla, Kim, Kerri & Kristi. Bobbye's niece, Kelly Hall, their special "summer daughter" was there for so many life events. As the children grew up and married, the family expanded to include ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with one more great-granddaughter due in September. She is survived by her only sibling, sister, Polly Marie Crawford Webb of Hawkins, Texas. Avera preceded Bobbye in death on November 27, 1990 in Baton Rouge, and her son, Kim left us on October 7, 2009 in New Jersey. Services will be held at Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Wednesday, August 30th. The visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 am, service at 11:00 am, followed by burial at 12:00 at Greenoaks Memorial Park alongside her beloved husband, Avera. The family is eternally grateful for the years of loving care she received at Eastern Shore from her many caregivers. Bobbye lived a joyful life, filled with laughter and good times. Everyone she loved and befriended was impacted by her boundless enthusiasm and energy. Her smile could light up a room and her laugh was contagious. Her passing leaves a big hole but her spirit lives on in the hearts of her family, friends and the countless others she has touched. In lieu of flowers we ask that you memorialize her by spending quality time with friends and family and cherishing life to the fullest. If you wish, donations may be made in her memory to Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 10230 Mollylea Drive, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70815.
