
Charles Carter Garvey, born Aug. 22, 1916, died July 3, 2011, in Baton Rouge. Charlie's sense of humor and vivacious spirit will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his family and friends. Born in New Orleans, Charlie lived in Baton Rouge after enrolling at LSU in the late 1930s. In the summer of 1941, Charlie enlisted in the Navy, six months before the United States entered World War II. Charlie completed his training in naval aviation at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla., in 1942. He was thereafter assigned to the USS Minneapolis at Honolulu, 60 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Between 1942 and 1944, as a Navy aviator in the Pacific fleet, Lt. Cmdr. Garvey participated in major actions in the South Pacific including the battles of the Coral Sea, Midway, Tassafaronga and Truk and the campaigns on Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands and Marshall Islands. After World War II, Charlie returned to LSU, graduating with a degree in business administration. Initially employed by WJBO radio, he later joined the staff of the State-Times and Morning Advocate, retiring from the newspaper as vice president of sales and marketing in 1985. Charlie was a charter member of St. Jude Catholic Church and a member of the Manresa House of Retreats for more than 50 years, serving as a captain for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Berenice Garvey; his beloved wife, Mary Lollie Brousseau Garvey; three of his children, Catherine Garvey, Paula Garvey and Patrick Garvey; brother, Walter Garvey; and three sisters, Mary Garvey, Paula Garvey Manship and Berenice Garvey Haas. Charlie is survived by his loving children, Charles Garvey Jr. and his wife, Catherine Noonan Garvey, of Covington, Mary Garvey Horst and her husband, Kenneth Horst, of Santa Fe, N.M., Michael Garvey, of Alpharetta, Ga., and Anne Garvey Henderson and her husband, Christopher Henderson, and James Garvey and his wife, Stephanie Marrocco Garvey, all of Atlanta; and three nieces, Rita Getzleman, of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Paula Klein, of Englewood, Colo., and Andrea Boyarko, of Highlands Ranch, Colo. Grandpa Garvey is survived by his grandchildren, Patrick Garvey and his wife, Morgan White Garvey, Lollie Frye Aulet and her husband, CJ Aulet, Catherine Garvey MacMahon and her husband, Douglas MacMahon, Ana Clare Frye, Beau Garvey, Leslie Garvey, Daniel Fromhart, Madison Garvey, Charles Garvey III, Caroline Garvey, Karen Henderson, Maria Henderson and Anna Henderson; and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 7, and for one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral on Friday, July 8, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2025 Stuart Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Manresa House of Retreats in Convent.
