

Professor and Dean Cheney Cleveland Joseph Jr. died Friday morning, December 18, 2015. He was born November 22, 1942 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Dr. Cheney Cleveland Joseph Sr. and Henrietta Colley Joseph. He graduated from University Laboratory High School in 1960 and Princeton University (cum laude) in 1964. At Princeton Cheney was a member of the Cottage Club and the Varsity Lightweight Crew. He was an Eagle Scout and a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps Reserve. A 1969 graduate of LSU's Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Cheney was a member of the Law Review and Order of the Coif. Professor Joseph served the LSU Law Center as the Dale E. Bennett Distinguished Professor of Law, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Interim Co-Dean. He taught, counseled and mentored thousands of Louisiana lawyers and Judges for almost 50 years. For many years, Cheney served as the Executive Director of the Louisiana Judicial College and was named Director Emeritus by the Louisiana Supreme Court. Aside from his academic career Cheney served as Administrative Assistant, District Attorney's office, East Baton Rouge Parish; United States Attorney, Middle District of Louisiana, First Assistant District Attorney and District Attorney, East Baton Rouge Parish; Judge Pro- Tempore, 16th Judicial District Court; Judge Pro-Tempore, 40th Judicial District Court; and Executive Counsel to the Governor of Louisiana. He served for many years as a reporter for the Louisiana State Law Institute. He was also a reporter for the Louisiana Supreme Court's Advisory Committee for the Louisiana Judges' Bench Book on Criminal Jury Instructions. He has been a member of the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement, the Louisiana Sentencing Commission, and the Louisiana Law Institute's Advisory Committee for the Louisiana Code of Evidence. In addition to many Law Review articles, Professor Joseph was the co-author with Professor Lamonica of West's Treatise on Criminal Jury Instructions and Procedure. Professor Joseph was honored by the Louisiana Bar Foundation as the 2008 Distinguished Professor and by the LSU Law Center as its Distinguished Alumni in 2013. A long time Rotarian, Cheney was President of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge in 1995 - 1996 and was a Paul Harris' Fellow. An active member of Trinity Episcopal Church for his entire life, he served as acolyte, reader, usher and Lay Eucharistic Minister. Cheney was a past President of The Cercle de Bacchus and Past Chairman of The Baton Rouge Assembly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Cheney Cleveland Joseph, Sr., Henrietta Colley Joseph Yoder and step-father Joseph F. Yoder Jr. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Terrell Joseph; his sons, Dr. Terrell Joseph and his wife, Dr. Natalie Martin Joseph, and their children Reece and Chloe; Allen F.C. Joseph and his son Jackson; his brothers and their wives, Dr. Allen Stewart Joseph and Cynthia Nesbit Joseph, D. Colley Joseph and Roberta Cobb Joseph, his nieces and nephews, Luke and Samantha Joseph and their children Katherine and Sarah, Cheney Francis and Kellie Joseph and their child Henry, Callie Gorman, Courtney Gorman, Benjamin Joseph, David Cleveland Joseph and wife Dr. Jamie Perry Joseph and their children Perry and Chaney, Joshua Joseph; and his sister-in-law Jane Terrell Johnson and her husband Jeff and their daughter Dr. Ginny Good and her husband, Tom and their children, Mary, Malcolm and Thomas. He is also survived by his cousins Dr. Gerald Joseph, Jr. and his wife Helen and their children Ashley, David and Shaw and Susan Joseph Cobb and her children Brent and Rachael Cobb and the children of his late cousin Nancy Joseph Katz, Andrew and Katherine. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Sunday evening, December 20, 2015, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Service at Trinity Episcopal Church on Monday, at 11am, with visitation at 10 a.m. and reception after the service.
