"Conrad was born on November 5, 1924 to Helene Holve Meijer and Johanne Marie Meijer in Iserlohn, Germany. Conrad was home schooled by his mother in northern India where his father was building two sugar factories. At the age of eleven, he was enrolled in boarding school, Christelijk Lyceum, in Bandoeng, Indonesia because war was building up in Germany. However in 1941, when Pearl Harbor was bombed, the Japanese invaded Indonesia and Conrad was captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner. He was in Sumatra when the war ended and spent six more months there as communications were not good at that time. After a year with his parents in northern India he left for college. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Glasgow University in Scotland. True to his love of the sugar industry, he was hired as a young "Scottish" engineer to work at Central Romano Corporation. During his thirteen years there, he was trained at the Quaker Oats company in Omaha, Nebraska and shortly thereafter became manager of a sugar byproducts plant in LaRomana, Dominican Republic. In 1965 he moved to Baton Rouge, LA and worked as construction manager at Kaiser Aluminum. He retired in 1982 to look after family business. Survivors are his loving wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Camille Koch Meijer. Four children: Conrad Gregory Meijer (Laura), Malcolm Koch Meijer (Michele), Andrew Mark Meijer (Anne), Robin Elizabeth Meijer Barnett (Anthony). Nine grandchildren: Helen Marie Meijer Caywood (Kyle), Ashley Elizabeth Meijer, Matthew L. Conrad Meijer, Ryan Bernard Meijer, John Barrett Meijer, Andrew Mark Meijer, Jr, Conrad Louis Meijer, Joseph Bennett Barnett (Madelin), Elizabeth Camille Barnett. Two great grandchildren: William Kyle Caywood, Hannah Marie Caywood, who were all the pride of his life. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church (2025 Stuart Ave, Baton Rouge, LA 70808) from 10:30 am until the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. Graveside Services will be private. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to St. Aloysius Church, Rural Life Museum, or Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. Francisville.
