
Dorothy Nina Tapscott, 62, died June 27, 2010, at her home in Baton Rouge after an extended illness. She was born Oct. 13, 1947, in Tupelo, Miss., to Chester A. Tapscott Jr., and Marjorie Bell Tapscott. She retired earlier this year with 27 years of service from the State of Louisiana's Office of Community Development as the assistant director. She is a 1965 graduate of Nettleton High School and a 1969 graduate of Mississippi University for Women with a degree in history. After teaching in the Jackson public school system and working as a city planner in Lafayette, she was employed by the State of Louisiana. Dottie was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Baton Rouge. She had a wide circle of friends that were as diverse as her hobbies and interests. She and her dogs, which were certified by Therapy Dogs International Inc., brought hours of enjoyment to nursing home patients. She participated in obedience and agility classes and trials through the Louisiana Capital City Obedience Club. She, along with her friends, traveled to competitions in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. She enjoyed attending meetings of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the MUW Alumni Association. Survivors include three brothers, Chester A. "Scotty" Tapscott III, of Jackson, Bill Tapscott and his wife Carol, of Nettleton, and Mike Tapscott and his wife Marsha, of Tupelo, Miss.; two nieces, Dawn Tapscott Hairald and her husband, Shawn, of Netteton, and Rachel Atkins, of Los Angeles; and four nephews, Brent Tapscott, of Ridgeland, Michael Atkins, of Savannah, Ga., and David Tapscott and John Tapscott, both of Tupelo; and two great-nephews, Payne and Cooper Hairald, of Nettleton. She is also survived by two beloved Shetland Sheepdogs, Misty and Sailor; and a cat, Sonny Boy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Marjorie Tapscott; a sister, Marilyn Tapscott Atkins; and one sister-in-law, Jewel Henry Tapscott. The family will receive friends at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., Baton Rouge, Monday, June 28, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Additional visitation at the chapel of Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo, Tuesday, June 29, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, at St. James Catholic Church in Tupelo. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park, Tupelo. Charitable donations may be made to the individual's charity of choice.
