

Dr. Erat S. Joseph was born on August 16, 1936, a husband, father, grandfather and professor emeritus found his eternal peace on Saturday, July 5, 2025, with his children by his side. He was married for nearly 60 years to his beloved wife, Mary, who passed away in 2019. He devoted much time taking care of Mary in her later years. He was born in Kerala, India. Joe attended Trivandrum Engineering College, and during his four-year stint there, he won the Chess championship every single year. After getting his Masters in Civil Engineering, he emigrated to the US in 1965 to pursue a doctorate at the University of Colorado, Boulder. With a PhD in hand, Joe moved to Pennsylvania, and he was a college professor at Keystone College, Lafayette College in Easton and University of Pittsburgh. He won an award for the best article of the year in a math journal for introducing a new tool to solve a math problem. Subsequently, he moved to Southern University in Baton Rouge and served as the Chief of Civil Engineering department for many years. He brought many research grant funds to the University. After retirement, he obtained two patents related to Wind and Wave Energy and founded a company in this regard. Joe is survived by his son, Dr. Bobby Joseph (Dr. Jasmine Joseph); daughter, Dr. Bina Mampilly (Dr. George Mampilly); grandchildren, Dr. Michelle Joseph, Anju Bottcher (Jake), and Joey Mampilly; siblings, Tomy Zachariah (Celine), Philip Zachariah, Cicily Perumpanani, and Bridget Joseph (Abraham); and a host of other family members.
He is preceded in death by brother, Kurien; and sisters, Mercy and Sally. Visitation will be at St. Mark Catholic Church, 42024 Hwy 621, Gonzales, LA, on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 9am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Burial will immediately follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park in Baton Rouge.
