Earl Eugene “Gene” “Flipper” Reeves was born on August 17, 1943 in Greensburg, Louisiana. He lived the majority of his adulthood in Baton Rouge, later retiring to his childhood home in Greensburg. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Gene passed away peacefully, August 9, 2024, at North Oaks Memorial Hospital in Hammond, Louisiana, due to complications caused by Covid-19. He was 80 years old.
Gene retired from the Baton Rouge Police Department as a Captain and Shift Commander with 30 years of service. After retirement, he worked for the State of Louisiana as the head of security for The Office of Group Benefits. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his dog, Grumpy. His biggest pleasure was feeding wildlife at his home in the country, his favorite being a chipmunk named “Little Lou.” Gene had a big heart and would feed and care for all of the abandoned dogs that would find their way to his home. Sometimes it would take years to gain their trust, but he was persistent. They would eventually become “buddies” as he would like to say.
Gene is survived by his son Randy Reeves (wife, Lisa), daughter Diane Renee McKee (Phillip), grandchildren, Derrick Reeves (wife, Courtland), Brandon McKee, Kelsi McKee (fiancé, Hugh Bowman), sister-in-law’s Carolyn Reeves, Lyndell Reeves and Beverly Prejean. He is preceded in death by his wife, Carol Ann Prejean Reeves, father, Ivy Earl Reeves, mother, Janie Foster Reeves, and brothers Ivy Reeves and Douglas Reeves.
A heartfelt thanks to the staff at North Oaks Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care and to Ricky Wascom, Kirk Summers and Rex Pellichino for their unwavering support during this difficult time.
Visitation will be Monday, August 19th at Greenoaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, beginning at 9:30 a.m, with service at 11:00. Burial will immediately follow at Greensburg Cemetery in Greensburg, Louisiana. Pallbearers will be Derrick Reeves, Brandon McKee, Hugh Bowman, Mike Reeves, Kirk Summers and Rex Pellichino.
