
Life is not worth living if not lived and Elise B. Smith lived for 103 years. She passed away at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at Lakewood Quarters Retirement Community. She was a native of New Orleans, a longtime former resident of Covington and a resident of Baton Rouge. Visiting at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 9 a.m.. until service at 10 a.m., conducted by Dr. Paul Anderson. Cryptside service and entombment at Hope Mausoleum, 4841 Canal St., New Orleans, at 2 p.m. Thursday. "Aunt Elise," as she was affectionately known by her family, is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Preceded in death by her husband, Dr. R. Gordon Smith; parents, John Jacob and Elizabeth Weihing Broders; brothers, John Jacob Jr., Edwin A. and Leo E. Broders; and sister, Freda B. Ponseti. Elise was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Covington Country Club, where she played golf regularly until she was 84, Covington Senior Citizens Club, Abita Springs Senior Citizens Club, AARP in Mandeville and Mandeville Senior Citizens Club. She also was a regular volunteer at St. Tammany Hospital for more than 25 years. She moved to Baton Rouge in 2000 and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She lived with her brother, Edwin, until May 2003, when she moved to Lakewood Quarters Assisted Living where she was active and rarely missed Bingo, exercise class and parties with a "slightly dirty martini with two olives." Elise was very much loved by her family, friends, residents and staff of Lakewood Quarters. Special thanks to Terry O'Bryan-Atchetee, her devoted and loving "Special Angel." More than one tear was shed at her passing.
