Barrie and Lee were blessed with 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren: George Lee Griffin, Jr. (his wife, and children, Leigh Ann Griffin, Madeline, and Jack), William Dale (Bill) Griffin (his wife and children, Lisa Griffin, Lauren Morehead and her husband, Matthew, Michael and his fiancée, Ellie, and Andrew), and Elizabeth Barrett (Beth) Griffin (her oldest daughter, Allison Yeargin (her husband, Collin Yeargin, and children, Aubrey and Lydia), her two younger children, Anna Katherine Jackson (her husband, Austin, and daughter, Katherine Grady) and Griffin Miller and his fiancée, Lindsay Ledbetter, and their father, Alan Miller.
Barrie, a Baton Rouge native, lived in Baton Rouge all of her life, except for 5 years. Three of her childhood years were spent in California, while her father served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy during World War II. On returning to Baton Rouge, she attended first through sixth grade at Bernard Terrace Elementary School and Baton Rouge High Schools through tenth grade. Her last two years in high school were spent in Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada and Syracuse, New York, due to her father’s employment with Solvay/Allied Chemical Company. She returned to Baton Rouge to attend LSU with her dear friends from 1st grade. At LSU, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. She met her future husband, Lee Griffin, who was a graduate student from Dallas, and they married in 1962. She received a Business degree in Secretarial Science in 1963, and they settled in Baton Rouge.
Barrie enjoyed being a Cub Scout leader, a member of the Junior League of Baton Rouge, a board member of Miriam’s House and the Evlyn J. Daniel Educational Foundation, and a member of the Study Club, the Novel Club, the Bridge Club, La Fiesta Dance Club, and the Harness Club. She was always active in various ministries at St. James Episcopal Church. She was dedicated to supporting her husband, Lee, in his many activities during his thirty-seven years in banking, 4 years as CEO of the LSU Foundation, and his relentless service to our community. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were a joy to her, and she loved being involved in their sports and other activities.
Her dedication to God and her family were always her priority, and she loved every minute of it. One of her favorite scripture verses (and her mother’s also) was, “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all things else will be given unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
Visitation will take place at St. James Episcopal Church on Thursday, January 2nd, 2025 at 10:30 am, followed by the Eucharistic Service at noon. Internment will follow at the Young Family Cemetery in the Plains, Louisiana.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial contributions would be appreciated to St. James Episcopal Church, St. James Place, the LSU Foundation, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, or any charity of your choice.
