

"Elizabeth "Betty" Ruth Safford Hawkins, DPM, November 30, 1955 - November 17, 2018. Elizabeth passed away at her home on November 17, 2018. She was a resident of Baton Rouge and native of Brusly. FUNERAL at 11:00 AM. VISITATION at 10:00 AM on Wednesday Nov. 21, 2018 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She is survived by husband Robert Hawkins; daughter Ashley Hawkins Borneman and husband William Borneman, daughter Jennifer Hawkins, and son Christopher Hawkins; brothers Daniel Safford and wife Karen Guidry Safford of Donaldsonville, Charles Safford and wife Janice Berthiaume Safford of Kenner, James Safford, III, and wife Mary Brasseux Safford, MD, of Gross Tete, Theodore (Todd) Landry of Brusly; and sister Margaret Safford Canella and husband Victor Canella, Sr., of Brusly; sister-in-law Cathy Dupuy Safford of Parks; nephews Packie, Tres, and Sean Allain, James Safford, IV, Dustin Safford, Harold Safford, Jr., Ryan Safford, and Jason Safford; nieces Tammie Allain Wildey, Christy Safford Fabre, Kim Safford Braud, and Ali Safford. She is also survived by Mary Lou Safford Begnaud, Alice Safford Robertson, and Alma Yvonne Safford Ebel. She is survived by Margie Landry Leblanc. She is also survived by relatives Dixon Smith and James Smith and Minnie Smith of Baton Rouge, and Dr. Wallace H. Smith of Charlotte, NC, and Dr. Walker Smith of Santa Barbara, CA. Also survived by Stephen Smith, JW Smith, Robert Bruce Smith of Baton Rouge. Elizabeth is also survived by best friends Barbara Best and Tanya Thomassie. She was preceded in death by her father James Clarence Safford, Jr., her biological mother Helen Joy Landry, and stepmother Claire Dolese Safford, and her brother Harold L. Safford. She is predeceased by John Theodore Landry and Walter J. Landry. Elizabeth grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River in Brusly, Louisiana, in a large family, raised by her father and stepmother after her mother's untimely death when she was a toddler. After graduating from St. Joseph's Academy, she received a bachelor's degree in social welfare at ULL and a master's degree in social welfare at University of Tennessee. While working at Blue Cross, she met her future husband Robert. After marrying, she continued her studies to become a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco and completed a residency in Seattle. She and Robert raised their three children in Baton Rouge, where she conducted her podiatry practice with caring and thoughtful attention for many years. In particular she felt very blessed to work at the Hanson's Disease Center in Carville, Louisiana. In addition to spending time with her family and friends, Elizabeth enjoyed craft projects and repurposing items for gifts. When she wasn't crafting, she also enjoyed gardening and watching classic movies and television shows. She was a faithful attendee at St. Luke's Episcopal Church and assisted in the church nursery. Pall bearers will be son Christopher Hawkins, son-in-law William Borneman, brothers Daniel Safford, Charles Safford, and James Safford, III, godchild James Safford, IV, Jason Safford and James Smith.
