Evelyn Rita Hymel Gautreaux

Evelyn Rita Hymel Gautreaux was born in White Castle, LA, on May 21, 1929, and passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at the age of 96. She was a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, LA. Evelyn was a farm girl that grew up on the river road in White Castle. She was surrounded by loving parents and siblings. She graduated from White Castle High School in 1946. Shortly thereafter, she met and married Clinton Anthony Gautreaux in 1947. They were married for 62 years until his death in 2009. She was an excellent cook and loved having Sunday dinner prepared for her family. After raising her five children, Evelyn went to work at Agapeland Daycare, caring for many more children for 39 years. She finally retired at age 90. She was beloved by both her students and their parents. Evelyn will be truly missed by anyone that had the privilege of knowing her.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Wayne Gautreaux, Rusty Gautreaux, Robin Mentzer (Doug), Rudy Gautreaux (Cindy), and Sandy Kapral (Todd); grandchildren, Paul Gautreaux (Cindy), Tore’ Thornton (Jason), Calliegh Tootle (Jeremiah), Caitlin Wilson (John), Jordan Gautreaux (Caitlyn), and Josh Gautreaux (Hailey); great-grandchildren, Hunter, Reed, Leo, Evelyn, Madelyn, and Baby Avery Rose coming soon; brothers, Larry and Ted Hymel; and a host of other loving family members. Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Anthony Gautreaux; and siblings, Marion, Paul, Jr., Lonnie, Rodney, Jerry, Winton, Barbara, and Rudy. Visitation will be at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 5657 Thomas Rd., Baton Rouge, LA, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, from 9:30am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11am.
