

On October 23, 2014 with his children by his side, Francis Pierce Summers, 96, a resident of Baton Rouge, affectionately known to many as “Pops”, peacefully left this world to join his heavenly Father. He spent many years alongside family and friends enjoying the great outdoors, hunting and fishing, mostly in the Atchafalaya Basin. He served in World War II as a member of the Navy Seabees and with God’s blessing, along with six brothers, returned home safely. He retired in 1977 from Vocational Rehabilitation after spending 28 years as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor/Manager. He was a longtime member of St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2807. Pierce is survived by his wife of 66 Years, Essie Mae Deville Summers; daughter and son-in-law, Jo and Jeff Singleton; son, Terry F. Summers; three grandchildren, Jason Summers, Kristin Summers and Holly Rogers; great-grandson, Ethan Rogers; brother, Leo Summers, along with numerous nephews and nieces, and his two “little sisters”, Beryl Templet and Yvonne Vince. Pallbearers will be nephews; Randy Summers, Donnie Summers, Ronald Summers, Jeff Summers, Ricky Summers, and Mackie Summers. Honorary pallbearers will be grandson, Jason Summers and great-grandson, Ethan Rogers. Proceeded in death by his daughter, Shelia Ann Summers; son, Gerald David Summers; brothers, Malcolm, Amos, Edward “Mutt”, Louis, Harney, Laurence and Lyle Summers; sisters, Lily Mae Summers Hubbs and Maude Alma Summers Sibley; and parents, Jabus Harney and Maude Alma Summers.Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, LA on Monday, October 27, 2014, from 5-9pm with rosary at 5:30pm. Services will resume at St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church in Greenwell Springs, LA on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at 9:30am until the Mass of Christian burial at 11:00am, celebrated by Reverend Michael J. Morony. Interment will follow at church cemetery. The family would like to invite everyone to join them after the services to continue fellowship and remembering the life of Pierce at Kristenwood Reception Center. For those that desire to make a charitable donation, the family has asked that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
