We celebrate the amazing 94 years of life of a very wonderful, beautiful, and gracious lady, Geraldine "Gerry" Kirkland Myers. Gerry was born on January 11, 1921 in Belcher, Arkansas. She received her B.A. Degree in Music Education and Masters Degree in Education from Louisiana Tech. She received her 30+hours in Education from Louisiana State University. Gerry dedicated her life to the education and development of young people as teacher and school counselor employed by the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board. She was appointed to serve as one of the founding members of the La. State Dept. of Education's ADAPT Team educating and counseling youth and adults in awareness and prevention of alcohol and drug abuse. Gerry was a gifted pianist and taught private piano lessons for many years. Gerry treasured the blessing of family. Gerry was preceded in death by her son, Dawson Corley; husband, Rivers T. Myers; parents, Daphne and J. M. Kirkland; brothers, John Morris Kirkland and Ralph Kirkland; brother-in-law, Alan Blackwood; niece, Barbara Blackwood. She is survived by her children Kitty Vice, Patty Still, Johnny Myers and wife Christina; Grandchildren, Bill and Gabriella Vice, Marci and Darren DeLaune, Beau and Kacie Vice, Michelle and David Laney, Lisa and David Mahaffey, Stephanie and Trey Player; Great-Grandchildren, Dustin Vice and wife Lauren, Dillon, Vincent, and LiamVice; Darren DeLaune Jr., Kara DeLaune; Skylar Vice; Amanda, Madison, and Erica Laney; Madison, Cayman, and Major Player; Great-Great Grandchild, Marley Kate Vice. Gerry is also survived by sister, Majorie Blackwood.; Nieces and nephews Kirk Blackwood, Keith and Sally Blackwood, Scott and Cara; Jamie Kirkland, Ralph, Kate; Sue and Johnny Kirkland; Holly and Greg Lawrence, Isabel; Jay and Christie Kirkland, Hailey and Abby. We express our gratitude to Gerry's longtime family friends Nancy Kaufman, Hollis Taylor, nephew Kirk Blackwood for their devotion and always being there to love and help her. Gerry took great pleasure in God's creation that was evident in the vivid colors of her beautiful flowerbeds and the many squirrels and birds she attracted to her many feeders. She also had a passion for wellness holding a firm belief that daily exercising your mind, body, and spirt were the keys to wholeness. Even at the age of 94, this amazing lady continued to exercise daily whether walking or riding a minimum distance of two miles each day and performing calisthenic exercises. She was an avid reader, crossword and sudoko puzzle enthusiast, and continued to listen to spiritual devotions, books on tape, and classical music even after her eyesight failed. Gerry embraced every day of life with fervor and joy. She was an inspiration to us all. "A Faithful Friend is a sturdy shelter..." Gerry treasured her faithful friends, all staff and residents, at Sunrise at Siegen Assisted Living. We express our deep appreciation to everyone in administration and every person on Staff at Sunrise at Siegen Assisted Living for the gift of love and care, happy times, fun and laughter, friendships, and family you have been to our mother for the last five years.and the gift of family, friendships, wonderful memories you have been to us also. Not only have you helped Gerry make her desires for projects and events possible, you have been so gracious to us. You are all truly a gift of God's love and care to your residents -becoming dear friends. We are also grateful to KPW Staffing at Sunrise-Siegen for your loving, excellent care in taking care of our mother. All of you at Sunrise at Siegen will always have a special place in our hearts. Myers will be at Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 1020 Mollylea Dr., Baton Rouge, LA on Saturday, October 10, 2015 with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until service at 11:00 a.m., conducted by Pastors Fred Wideman, Ken Carroll, and Darren DeLaune. Luncheon will follow at the Church.
