She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on January 20, 1926, the daughter of Frederick C. and Minnie White Burns. She graduated from Classical High school in Springfield. She received a BA from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia, an MED from Springfield College and an MA from Radcliffe. Gloria also studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and the University per Straniere in Perugia, Italy. She taught English in the public schools of Somers, Connecticut, and Winchester, Massachusetts. In 1961 she joined the faculty of LSU and retired in 1996. After her retirement she returned to the English department at LSU where she continued to teach part time until 2007. In October 2020 Gloria moved to New Orleans to live with her niece Mary Ellen Burns and her husband Christopher Brown, where she enjoyed concerts, plays, and dance performances, as well as long walks in Audubon Park and evenings at sidewalk cafes, meeting people and their children and dogs, with her friends Angela O’Malley, Laurel Sheridan, Michael Manuselis, and Sophia Manuselis. She served as chairperson of numerous committees and as a Director of Freshman English. She was the recipient of the George H. Deer Distinguished Teaching Award in 1977 and the Amoco Foundation Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1994. Gloria was named LSU yearbook, The Gumbo, Favorite Professor in 1978 and received a commendation from the Louisiana House of Representatives upon her retirement in 1996. She is listed in Who's Who in America. Her professional memberships were the American Association of University Professors where she served as chapter vice president, the Modern Language Association, the South Central Renaissance Society and the South Central Conference on Christianity and Literature. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Lawrence, her parents, two brothers, Frederick T. and Michael, two sisters-in-law, Ann Desmarais Burns and Rose Sasek Modene, one brother-in-law, Charles Modene, one niece, Kathleen Modene, and one nephew, Lawrence Modene. She is survived by three nieces and one nephew, Mary Ellen Burns, Frederick J. Burns, Elizabeth Burns Duffany, Mary Modene, and two great nephews, Zachary Duffany and Ryan Duffany. Gloria attributed much of her long life and good health to the outstanding care she received over the years from Drs. Charles and Petermant Prosser, Dr. N. Joseph Deumite, Dr. T. Richard Lieux and Dr. George Fivgas. Her family wishes to thank her dedicated caregivers Takia, Charlene, Nikki, Tyeast, Margaret and Medina for making all her adventures possible.
