

Hazel Marie Scallan Broussard was born, Aug. 1, 1919, and went to meet the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010. She was a native of Alexandria. "Mah" loved life, family and friends. She took every chance possible to travel and see the world. She was a longtime resident of Whealdon Estates in Baton Rouge. Growing up, Hazel was a talented violinist and singer, performing for many special occasions in the Alexandria area. She worked as a school attendance secretary and bookkeeper at C.E. Byrd High School for many years and later retired from the Lafayette Parish school system. Hazel was an avid reader, loved dancing and music, and playing bingo. She loved watching LSU baseball and football games. Preceded in death by her parents Gaston Joseph Scallan Sr. and Mittie Marie Chaudoir Scallan; husband, Gilbert Lewis Broussard Jr., of Bunkie; sister, Mae Ruth "Joey" Scallan; brother, Gaston Joseph "Joe" Scallan Jr. and his wife, Evangeline "Vangie" Marie Theriot Scallan; and sister-in-law, Lena "Dolly" Manno Scallan. Survived by her brother, Leo Charles Scallan Sr. and his wife, Joy Acosta Scallan; sister, Doris Ann Scallan Wilcox and her husband, Curtis Wilcox; son, Gilbert Lewis Broussard III and his wife, Donnie Downs Broussard; son, Laurence "Larry" Douglas Broussard and his wife, Margaret Martin Broussard; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Charles, Buddy, Brian and Brad Broussard; Chuck Scallan, Tim Morrison and Ron Bajon. A wake will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Monday evening, Oct. 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 12:30 p.m. until funeral Mass at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be at Greenoaks Cemetery. Hazel wished goodbye and good health to all of her friends at Whealdon Estates. She found a friend in everyone she met, but she will best be remembered for her strong faith and love of God.
