Iris Eileen O’Quin Terral, born February 25, 1933, went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 8, 2021. Iris was born in Lone Pine, Louisiana and graduated from Bayou Chicot High School. She continued her education at Belhaven College and then transferred to Louisiana College where she received a bachelor’s degree. She went on to receive a master’s degree from Louisiana State University. Her teaching career spanned 35 years and she taught countless students at Glen Oaks High School, Broadmoor High School, and Central High School. She was passionate about education and was known for taking class field trips to destinations like Washington, D.C. and New York City.
As a small business owner, Iris embodied the entrepreneurial spirit and successfully ran several enterprises including an antique shop, a custom frame shop, and an estate sale business. Although she was a sought after connoisseur of precious metals and fine arts, she more closely identified with her simple roots and childhood home in rural Lone Pine. She possessed an exceedingly rare combination of dignity and humility, unfailing grace and impeccable wit, charming confidence and ceaseless compassion.
Iris was filled with the love of Jesus, and it overflowed into every aspect of her life. She gave generously to anyone and everyone, even when she had little to give. She served loyally in the local church, and used her business success to invest in others. She loved her husband dearly and selflessly supported his ministry, both locally and internationally. Her unwavering love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nephews left an eternal impact that will be passed on for generations. She was the quintessential matriarch and will be dearly missed.
Iris is preceded in death by her mother Aline Wall O’Quin, father Alfred Irion O’Quin, brother Benjamin O’Quin and her husband T.W. Terral. She is survived by her brother Linden O’Quinn, children Tommy Terral (spouse Felicia) and Debe Terral Burnham (spouse Jeffrey), four grandchildren (Allison Horton, Amy Williams. Jeremy Burnham and Jordan Burnham), fifteen great grandchildren, two nephews and many great nieces and nephews. The family has felt overwhelming love and support from friends, relatives, and Iris and T.W.’s church family at First Baptist Church and Lanier Baptist Church.
Services for Iris will take place on Friday, August 13th at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, Louisiana. There will be a visitation starting at 11:00 am, with the service to begin at 2:00 pm.
