
James E. Phillips Jr. passed away on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006. He was born Dec. 31, 1929, inVicksburg, Miss.Jim grew up in Louisianaand attendedUniversityHigh Schoolin Baton Rouge. Summers and holidays were always spent with family inLakeProvidence, where he met his beloved wife, Betty, whom he married in 1948. After graduating from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute with a degree in accounting in 1951, he returned to Baton Rougein 1960 to attend theLSULawSchool, receiving his juris doctorate in 1963. After serving as an assistant attorney general for the state for three years, he began a distinguished legal career with Exxon in Louisiana, Texas,New York, Connecticutand New Jersey. In 1986, he was named general counsel for Exxon Company International -- the highest corporate attorney rank ever achieved by an LSU law graduate. His responsibilities as general counsel of ECI included many years of worldwide travel for him and Betty before he retired in 1994. Jim was a devoted husband and father, known and loved by family and friends for his kindness, generosity, intellect, and work ethic. He was a loyal supporter of LSU, regardless of his domicile. His contributions and honors include LSU Law School Distinguished Alumnus of 1994, president of the Law Alumni Association, charter member of the Law Center Fellowship Program, establishment of the James E. and Betty M. Phillips Endowed Professor of Law, member of the Chancellor's Advisory Council and LSU Foundation. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty; his children, Cindy Holloway and husband Bob, Kathie Augustine and husband Ed, and Douglas Phillips and wife Robin; grandchildren, Ryan and Ross Crane, Brandi and Michael Augustine, and Douglas-James "D.J." Phillips; sister, Mary Ann Andrews; and brother, Fred Phillips. His parents, Nan Schneider Williams and James E. Phillips Sr., preceded him in death. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 6, from 5 p.m.to 8 p.m.at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St.Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.Thursday, Dec. 7, at St. James Episcopal Church, after visitation in the church chapel at 10 a.m.Graveside service will follow atGreenoaksMemorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Services of the Capital Area, 3722 North Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA70806.
