Surrounded by love, Dorothy “Jean” Stewart Nichols was called home on January 29th, 2026, at the age of 88. A longtime resident of Gonzales, Louisiana, Jean lived a life marked by steadfast faith and a quiet strength that guided her through every season. The values she embodied and the love she shared so freely will continue to live on through those who knew and loved her.
Jean was born on August 5th, 1937, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Willie and Alberta Easley. She built a dedicated career as an HR Manager with Badons Employment Agency, where she worked faithfully for many years before retiring. Known for her strong work ethic, leadership, and resilience, Jean approached all that she did with commitment and care.
A woman of deep and enduring faith, Jean was a devoted member of Lanier Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 38 years, and later Ascension Baptist Church. Outside of church, she was a loyal regular at her local Merle Norman, proudly maintaining her skincare routine throughout her life. She was also a passionate basketball fan, and wherever Jean was, if a game was on, it could be found playing on the television. Her enthusiasm for the sport was well known and always gladly accommodated.
Jean was preceded in death by her sisters, Mildred Smart and Joy Shaw; her first husband, love of her life, and the father of her children, James Rudolph Stewart; and her beloved husband of many years, Walter Nichols. Together, Jean and Walter shared a love of adventure as charter members of the Holiday Rambler RV Club.
She is survived by her children, Carolyn Cline, Dennis Stewart Sr., and Keith Stewart; her sisters, Wanda Bauerle and Judy Wood; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Ascension Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 12:00 p.m. Burial will take place immediately afterward at Greenoaks Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all those who provided care, comfort, and compassion to Jean in her later days. Your kindness, patience, and dedication did not go unnoticed and brought great peace to both Jean and her loved ones. The support and care shown during this time will always be remembered and deeply appreciated.
