

John was a resident of Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home, Reserve, and a resident of Central for many years. A native of Plaquemine, he died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at the age of 91. He was retired from The Advocate, having served for more than 38 years, and was manager of the Engraving Department. He was a World War II veteran with more than 3 years in New Guinea, serving with the 27th Air Depot of the 5th Air Force. Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Monday, Dec. 26, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary service. Visitation at the funeral home Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 10 a.m. until service in the chapel at noon. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eunice Laurent; son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Kathleen Laurent; daughter, Marlene Gonzales; brother, Richard "Dutch" Laurent; sister, Alice Davis; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Richard Laurent; brothers, Harold and Murphy Laurent; sisters, Beatrice Lassard and Vera Haydel; and son-in-law, Larry Gonzales. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and a lifetime member of American Legion Nicholson Post 38 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3784.
