

John Albert Stephens passed away peacefully at home in Denham Springs, LA, on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at the age of 77. John was a native of Baton Rouge, LA, and a graduate of Lee High. John proudly served his country in the United States Navy after high school and spent his 30 year career serving the community, retiring as a Captain in the Baton Rouge Fire Department. John was known as the life of the party everywhere he went and never met a stranger. His antics throughout his lifetime garnered him many nicknames, including “Catfish,” “Shoe Town,” “Pom Pom John,” “Big John,” and “Pops” among many others. John was drawn to hobbies that involved big gatherings and particularly enjoyed fishing, shooting pool, playing golf, bowling, and watching racing. He was well-known for his cooking skills and could often be found firing up a pot of jambalaya or pastalaya, wherever it was needed. John enjoyed spending time laughing and telling stories with his friends and family. His quick wit and clever humor will be profoundly missed by all who loved him. John is survived by his fiancé, Ceil Romeo; sons, Shane Stephens (Janna), Chris Stephens (Kendall), and Johnny Stephens (Natalie); daughter, Dana Russell (Earl); 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Wanda Seymour; as well as many nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his mother, Marion Braud Mulkey and father John Uril Stephens. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 12pm until the time of funeral services at 2pm. Interment will immediately follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Earl Graham, Brandon Heinrich, Spencer Stephens, Damyan Drury, Brandon Romeo, and Hunter Romeo, along with honorary pallbearers Ray Salvato and Murray Corkern.
