Lawrence Courville Jr., affectionately known since childhood as “Bub” passed away peacefully at his home in Baton Rouge on June 23rd. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Sr. and Lessie Courville; brothers, C. W., Willie, and Leslie Courville; and son Craig Allen Courville.
Survived by the love of his life and wife of nearly 69 years, Loretta Courville; son Ken (Selena) Courville; daughter Connie (Xavier) Rodriguez; grandchildren Bryan, Kelsey, and Kayley Rodriguez, and Julia Courville.
Bub was born at home on Bayou Big Graw down the Atchafalaya River from Krotz Springs, Louisiana. He was a graduate of Port Barre High School and served in the United States Army in Germany during peace times. He was a skilled fitter known for his ability to work in both pipe and structural design. A member of Local 198, he was highly respected by those he worked with. The work he most enjoyed was building push boats with his brother-in-law, Albert Ortis. Over the years, they launched many boats onto the Atchafalaya that would go on to work the waterways of the United States and other parts of the world. His son, Ken, remembers him fondly as a man who whistled while he worked and he was often heard whistling or singing hymns as he went about his work.
Bub’s work ethic was impressive and he was a man of principle and conviction; however, his commitment to his Savior, Jesus Christ and to his family was by far the most important things in his life. He loved, provided for, and protected his family well. His service to the Lord began early in his life using his God-given voice, guitar playing, and his skills as an apt builder to assist those in need. His devotion and faithfulness to Loretta, were demonstrated daily, he cared for his disabled son with love and compassion, he raised his children to put Christ first in their lives. He encouraged his grandchildren to love God with all their hearts.
He was an avid hunter and spent many wonderful times in the woods with his Dad, brothers, son and hunting buddies. During hunting season, he looked forward to heading to the “camp” on Friday after work, always making sure to be home on Saturday evenings to bring his family to church on Sunday morning.
He was the best Husband, Daddy, PawPaw, son, brother, uncle, and friend and words cannot express how deeply he will be missed.
His family would like to thank all those who helped in his caregiving near the end of his life: Dee from Home Instead; Blair, Keke and Doris from Clarity Hospice who all provided
invaluable love and care for him and his family. A special thanks to Ken, Selena, and Julia Courville for the sacrifices made to provide constant care these past months.
