B. Mack Hearne, age 95, passed away in his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on February 18, 2025 with his loving wife, Gayle, by his side. He was a gifted musician, artist, and storyteller, gracing our lives with his quick wit and generous heart. His journey on this earth was marked by love, compassion, and his unwavering faith in God. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mack was born on August 10, 1929, in Deweyville, Texas to Howard E. and Willie Mae (Bill) Hearne. Mack’s musical ability was fostered at a young age; by 5th grade he had mastered the clarinet. In high school, a local jazz musician introduced him to the world of jazz, and he was hooked. Within a week, Mack had purchased his first tenor saxophone. By age 14, he had joined his first jazz orchestra and was touring all over North Louisiana. During college, he joined the Debonnaires, a group of jazz musicians who became like family to him.
For decades, Mack influenced and inspired hundreds of young musicians as a band director. He taught at Ouachita High School, Lee Middle School, and Northeast University in Monroe, as well as Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge. He also founded, directed, and played in the Platinum Sound Orchestra, which became the most active jazz orchestra in Baton Rouge. Upon retirement, Mack opened his own instrument repair business, helping countless musicians and entire bands play to the best of their abilities.
Mack put his family and his faith above all else, and he and Gayle were married for 50 years. He was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Gayle (Brueck), son Martin (Lisa), grandchildren Angela (Doug), Jason (Stacy), and Amy (Kris), sister Dana (Ray), and niece Amanda. He is also survived by his nine great-grandchildren: Avery, Riley, Taylor, Aiden, Kaden, Lainey, Isaac, Liam, and Claire. Mack was preceded in death by his loving parents, grandparents, and his niece Dana D.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 25 at 11:00 am and a funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm at Greenoaks Funeral Home 9595 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70815
