
Margaret Taylor Lane, a resident of St. James Place, died Sunday, May 10, 2009. She was born Feb. 6, 1919, in St. Louis, the daughter of Alice Jones and Archer Taylor. Her husband, Horace Cotton Lane, and brother, Richard L. Taylor, preceded her in death. Her daughter, Maggie Lane Evans and husband Jim, and her son, Thomas Archer Lane and wife Sherrill survive her. Three sisters, Cynthia T. Burton, Mary Constance Taylor and Ann T. Schwing also survive her. Also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Mark Wesley Evans, Camille Womack Palmer, Caroline Copeland Lane, Malcolm Taylor Lane, and Archer Cotton Lane, and great-grandchildren, Jacob Lynn Rothwell, Victoria Jeanine Evans and Juliana Taylor Evans. She was especially close to the Hepding family of Geissen, Germany, a lifelong family friendship that is in its fourth generation. Mrs. Lane graduated from University High School and LSU, where she was in the founding chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She earned a degree in library science from Columbia University and her law degree from LSU. She worked for many years as recorder of documents for the state of Louisiana. After retiring, she worked as law librarian for her husband's law firm and authored several books on government documents. In addition to her family, her passions were libraries, genealogy and state documents. She was active in the Louisiana Library Association and the American Library Association and was a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association for 66 years. Although always modest and unassuming, she was honored to receive the Lucy Foote Award, the Culver Award and the Childs Award. The LLA named an award in her honor to recognize excellence in the field of government information. She was listed in Who's Who in America. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Tuesday, May 12, was from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Visitation at University United Methodist Church on Wednesday, May 13, from 1:30 p.m. until funeral service at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to University United Methodist Church, 3350 Dalrymple Drive, Baton Rouge LA 70802; the Archer Taylor Preserve, c/o the Land Trust of Napa County, 1700 Soscol Ave., Suite 20, Napa, CA 94559, or Kappa Kappa Gamma, 4050 W.
