
Martin A. Schmit Sr., a native and resident of Baton Rouge, passed away Monday, May 24, 2010, at the age of 84. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army airborne having served in World War II in the European theater and was retired from Harmony Construction. Mr. Schmit is survived by his wife, Francis Laird Smith Schmit; a brother, Cecil Dawson; a daughter, Nancy Alonzo and husband Jorge; two sons, René Schmit and wife Debbie, Martin A. Schmit Jr. and wife Linda; stepdaughter, Sherry McBeath and husband Randy; two stepsons, Al Smith and wife Kaye, and Benny Smith. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Roch and Mattie Schmit; sister, Cecile Dawson Cook; and a granddaughter, Angel Schmit. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., Wednesday May 26, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. with funeral service at Foster Road Baptist Church at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Huey Moak and Rev. Danny Miller. Burial will be at the Concord Methodist Church Cemetery on La. 421 in Jackson. Pallbearers will be Al Smith, Ben Smith, Mike Laird, Dale Leland, Scotty Laird and Tim Laird.
