Mercedes Guidry Brickley

"His Mercy endures forever." Psalm 118. A longtime resident of Baton Rouge, she flew home on the wings of angels on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. She was 88 and a native of Lottie. "Merce-the-Nurse" was a longtime employee of Dr. Holden and Dr. Baquet on Plank Road. She was a faithful member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Altar Rosary Society, parish Bereavement Committee and Perpetual Adoration. She loved cats and gardening and was noted for the fine cakes and pies she baked. She is survived by a son, Will, of the old home place at Lottie; daughter-in-law, Masie, of Springfield; two grandchildren; brother-in-law, Robert Plant, of Oregon; several nieces, nephews and cousins, Alida Lepine and husband Reggie Roberts, of Baton Rouge, Marie Powers, and Kenneth and the Rev. Winus Roeten, of New Orleans; and her special bunny, Abigail. Mercedes was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, William Brickley; daughter, Mary Rose Brickley; mother, Rose Clark Duckworth; father, Sidney Guidry; stepfather, Barney Duckworth; and brother. Visitation at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 14040 Greenwell Springs Road, on Saturday, April 30, from 9:30 a.m. until recitation of the rosary at 10:40 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at the church at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Thomas P. Duhé, celebrant. She will be laid to rest beside five generations of family at Cottonwood Cemetery, Lottie, with a graveside service at 2 p.m. Saturday. A heartfelt thanks goes out to Cookie Ricks, Joyce Payer, Dusty Champagne, Ellen and Stewart Couvillion, the Nicholas family, caretakers, Barbara Elliott and Florida Deamer, the staffs at The Carpenter House at St. Joseph Hospice, Ms. Ollie, Kristen, Ginny "Helga.". They all made her last days a little less lonely and a lot more comfortable. The family requests memorial donations be made to Cottonwood Cemetery Fund, c/o Willie B.
