Michael Joseph Canal blessed us with his presence for 59 years, before he went to heaven to see his Mom, nephew (Josh), and many extended family members on Saturday, October 3, 2015. Mike was born in Schenectady, New York, grew up in Tyler, TX, and graduated from La Tech University. He worked at a cattle ranch near Tyler, before coming to Baton Rouge. He worked at LSU for 35 years, most of those, doing what he loved – raising cattle. He was also very involved with the LSU Block & Bridle Club and enjoyed passing on his knowledge and love for cattle to any students that would listen. Mike loved his family, but he also had a passion for hunting, fishing and all outdoors. He was well known for his booming voice, hearty laugh, and kind heart. Mike will be remembered as a loving husband, caring father, devoted son and brother, and loyal friend. Those left to cherish his memories are: his Father, Joseph Canal; his wife of 30 years, Anita; two sons: Justin and Tyler Canal; four brothers: Joseph, Robert, Donald, Ronald; one sister: Frances Benjamin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his Mother, Yvonne Purpera Canal, and his nephew, Josh Canal. Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation which will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church, Address: 9150 Highland Rd, Baton Rouge, LA 70810 on Friday, October 9, 2015 from 9:30 am until the Memorial Mass at 11 am. Entombment will be at Christ the King Mausoleum, 657 Main St, Simmesport, LA 71369, on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Rocky Mountain Conservancy, rmconservancy.org, in memory of Mike.
