
"Life Can Be Beautiful." He was born June 16, 1917, in Russia and spent his childhood in Riga, Latvia. He immigrated to the United States in 1941, barely escaping the invasion of his native country by the Nazis. While living in New York City, he met his wife of 59 years, Ada Lehrer Shackleton. They moved south to give their two young daughters a "more civilized home" and settled in Baton Rouge in 1955. He started his own seafood company, S&D Imports, in 1965, and operated the company continuously until his retirement in 2004. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Deborah Shackleton Cavalier and Dr. Steven Cavalier, of Baton Rouge, and Sara Shackleton McKeogh and Michael McKeogh, of Houston. He has two grandchildren whom he deeply loved, Jennifer Shackleton Cavalier, of New York City, and Zachary Isaac Cavalier, of Baton Rouge; and a cousin, Dora Felber, of Lennox, Mass. His mother, Zara Shakovitzky, and sister, Dora Shakovitzky, died in the Holocaust. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Wednesday, June 18, from 9 a.m. until chapel service at 10 a.m., conducted by Rabbi Stanton Zameck. Interment in Liberal Cemetery. Thanks to his physicians, Dr. Vincent Tumminello, Dr. Glen Schwartzberg, Dr. Joseph Deumite and Dr. Bryan Griffith for many years of care and friendship.
