Murley Melancon Patin was born on May 9, 1931 in the family home near Butte La Rose, LA. Her declining health was triggered by a fall and resulted in a broken hip in Sept. of 2020. Murley died on Monday, Dec. 28, 2020 at the age of 89 in her home in Baton Rouge, LA.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021 beginning at 10:30 a.m., St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 9150 Highland Road, Baton Rouge, LA. Interment will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
Murley spent her early years in Cecilia, LA. She married Andrew J. Patin at the age of 19. The couple settled in North Baton Rouge in the early 1950s and were blessed with four children. Murley and Andrew were a guiding light in their grandchildren’s lives. Being of the same hearts and Cajun spirit, they were married for 60 years until Andrew’s death in 2010. Murley was a member of St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church for 65 years. Murley was a strong willed little Cajun lady with a heart too big to exclude anyone. Kind and generous, she welcomed many into her home to enjoy a delicious meal, a cup of coffee or just conversation. You never left her house with an empty belly or empty heart.
Referred to by most as “Moma” or “Mawmaw”, Murley’s priorities were caring for her family and caring for her cats. She was an excellent cook, loved Cajun and country music and dancing. If there was a dance floor, she would find it and if there was not, she would create one.
Murley leaves behind her daughter, Shirley Patin Vicknair; son, Henry J. Patin and fiancée Tammy Dugas; brother, Alton J. Melancon, (Cecilia, La.); six grandchildren, Felicia P. Couch (Warner Robins, Ga.), Mickey Gautreaux and wife, Ronalyn, Michael Gautreaux, Paul Vicknair and wife, Christy, Jenny V. Champion and husband, Beau, and Brandy P. Thomas and husband, Oliver; fourteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and longtime friend, Lonnell Terrell, who was like a daughter.
Murley was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew; son, Andrew Jr., and daughter, Alice P. Gautreaux; great grandson David A. Vicknair; great-great grandson, Kyler King; parents Wilbert and Linda Melancon; sister, Mary M. Latiolais, and brothers, Dutile, Gussie, and Harris.
Our family would like to thank Mariyum and Maria, who have respectfully cared for, loved and been bright stars in Moma’s life during her last years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Baton Rouge, Greater B.R. Food Bank, Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area or charity of your choice.
