
A longtime Baton Rouge resident and an avid sportsman, he died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012. He was 99. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Friday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by burial in the Lemon-Jackson family cemetery in Laurel Hill. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 60 years, Katherine Stirling Cross. He is survived by a daughter, Katherine S. Haygood McVea (Mrs. Walker P. McVea), Baton Rouge and Clinton; two sons, Paul M. Haygood, New Orleans, and Dr. Bolling C. Haygood, Baton Rouge; two granddaughters, Charlotte H. Haygood Gregory (Mrs. Thomas M. Gregory), and Katherine S. Haygood Saulsbury (Mrs. Albert O. Saulsbury IV), all of New Orleans; a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Alston Gregory, New Orleans; and a sister-in-law, May Bolling Cross Holloway, widow of Fred A.L. Holloway, Baton Rouge. He also was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Meriwether Haygood, who were of Greenville, Ala.; and six brothers and sisters. Pallbearers will be Robert W. Bailey, John W. Barton Jr., Malcolm S. Dougherty Jr., Denis H. McDonald, Brandon G. Parlange, L. Mac Peak and Scott Singletary. Honorary pallbearers are W. Arthur Abercrombie Jr., James J. Bailey III, John W. Barton, David M. Ellison Jr., Tom Gibbens, S. Pendery Gibbens, John B. Noland, Dr. A. Gayden Robert Jr., and Troye A. Svendson. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama, following which he moved to Louisiana to begin his business career of more than 60 years. For almost 90 years he was an avid golfer and hunter, completing his last turkey hunt at the age of 98. He was a longtime member of the Section 14 Duck Hunting Club. He was a past president of the Baton Rouge Country Club, a past chairman of the Baton Rouge Assembly and an Honorary Life Member of the Boston Club of New Orleans. He also was, for many years, a member of the board of directors of City National Bank. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, the Baptist Foundation of Alabama (Mr. and Mrs. James M. Haygood Memorial Scholarship Fund), P.O. Box 241227, Montgomery, AL 36124-1227, or a favorite charity. The family expresses their appreciation to the staff of St. James Place for its caring attention and to Johnny Minniefield, Phyllis Robertson, Gloria Terry and Shonell Riley for their especially attentive and caring service as caregivers during the past year.
