A loving and devoted husband, who spent the last years of his life unselfishly caring for the love of his life of 51 years, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at his home. He left a lasting impression on those of us who witnessed the love he possessed for Mom, that will forever be remembered. Philip Joseph Lukas was 81, a native of Marche, Ark., and resident of Baton Rouge. Philip was a retired supervisor with Jack's Cookies with more than 30 years of service and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann Poché Lukas; daughters, Sharon Meaulance, Pam Kennedy and Nancy Engel; sons, Robert and Kenneth Perere; 24 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the Lifesource Hospice staff for their support in helping Dad with Mom's care, then in caring for him during his illness. Although Dad appreciated all of the hospice team, he held a special place in his heart for Betty Dixon, who lovingly groomed Mom on a daily basis; social worker Sonya Davis whose visits lifted his spirits; and Michelle Browning, former nurse for Mom. Special thanks to caregivers Mary Higginbothan and Emma Bell, who made it possible for Mom and Dad to live together in the comfort of their home. Special thanks to daughter-in-law Janie Whitehead for her unwavering commitment in volunteering her time weekly sitting with Mom for the past three years. Pallbearers will be his eight grandsons, Brandon Meaulance and Robert, Brad, Darrin, Lukas, Micah, Justin and Nicholas Perere. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Tuesday, Dec. 29, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until religious service in the chapel at 11 a.m., conducted by Chaplain Bruce L. Worrell. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
