
Dick Howell, 75, died Friday, March 21, 2008, in Baton Rouge, due to complications related to Alzheimer's disease. Howell transferred from Beaumont, Texas, to Baton Rouge with Goodyear Chemical in 1969. In Baton Rouge, Howell was a Realtor, home builder and developer. For nearly 20 years, "Coach" Dick Howell was a well-known American Legion baseball coach. Howell donated endless hours, money and energy mentoring and coaching young men in Baton Rouge in the fundamentals of baseball and sportsmanship. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Tuesday, March 25, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation resumes at the funeral home Wednesday from 9 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m. Graveside service at Beauregard Cemetery, DeRidder, on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Howell was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Howell. Survived by his five children, Jennifer Sansone and husband Ron, Terri Howell, Bubba Howell, Alison Gautreau and husband Craig, and Brad Howell and wife Mickie; six grandchildren, Bryan Sansone, Blake Sansone, Ryan Gautreau, Brynn Gautreau, Coti Howell and Hollie Howell; two great-grandchildren, Kayne Landry and Jeff Benson Jr.; and brothers, C.J. Howell and Carl Howell. Honorary pallbearers are all former young men who played baseball for Coach Howell.
