
Richard Alden Mayo was born May 16, 1944, and died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, as a result of an automobile accident while working in Pennsylvania. He was born to Eugene and Dorothy Nash Mayo in Jacksonville, Fla. He grew up in New Orleans and lived the majority of his adult life in Baton Rouge. He was a graduate of LSU, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Love Mayo; his sons, Jake Christopher Mayo and his wife, Emily Waguespack Mayo, of Baton Rouge, and Capt. Erik Alden Mayo, of Baton Rouge, U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps, currently serving at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan; two grandchildren, Christopher "Hill" Mayo and Molly Lloyd Mayo; two brothers, Stephen Alden Mayo, of San Francisco, and Thomas Alden Mayo, of New Orleans; mother-in-law, Mary Ann Jackson Love, of Ferriday; sister-in-law, Julie Love Cole and her husband, Bernard Cole, of Ferriday; two brothers-in-law, Louis Frederick Love and James Lloyd Love, both of Lafayette; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his father-in-law, Lloyd Frederick Love. Richard was an intensely spiritual, loyal and loving man. He cherished his wife Phyllis, to whom he was married for more than 40 years. He was particularly proud of his sons, Jake and Erik. Richard was loved and adored by his grandchildren, Hill and Molly, who were the light of his life. He was a master woodworker and a skilled boat builder. But more importantly, Richard was an avid student of life. His wit and special humor cannot be replaced and he will always remain present in our lives. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A private memorial service will be held for the family.
