Son of the late Robert Lee Atkinson, Jr. and Mary Virginia Latimer Atkinson, Bob was born in 1929, raised in Uptown New Orleans, and retired to Baton Rouge in 1991 with his beloved wife of 58 years, Fay Rice Atkinson (d. December 2015). Bob is survived by his sister, Jane Ann Atkinson of Baton Rouge; four children: Robert L. (Connie) Atkinson of Baton Rouge, Anne R. Atkinson of Metairie, Clarke H. (Francis) Atkinson of Austin, TX, and Alice C. (Colleen McCarthy) Atkinson of New Orleans; and two grandsons, Carter R. Atkinson of Baton Rouge, and Kevin L. Atkinson of Brooklyn, NY. Bob graduated from Fortier High School in New Orleans in 1946 and earned his Law Degree from Louisiana State University Law School. He served in the Office of the General Council of the United States Army from 1950 to 1953, stationed in California, and then deployed to Korea to help implement the Korean Armistice Agreement that established the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Upon his return to New Orleans, Bob established a successful law practice, representing a diversity of clients. Bob married in 1957 and cultivated a variety of interests expressive of his love of beautiful and complex things, including gardening, aquaria and tropical fish-keeping, and antiques and art collecting. Bob read widely, enjoyed investing, was an avid fan of football and LSU baseball, and loved classic cars and Hollywood and the movies. His wicked sense of humor and out-of-the-box thinking perpetually amused and amazed a wide circle of friends. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Trinity Episcopal Church (3552 Morning Glory Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70808), from 12:00 PM until the Funeral Service at 1:00 PM.
