

Ruth Smith Lengyel, a native of Simmsport, LA, longtime resident of Baton Rouge, LA and formerly Buffalo, NY, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2011 at Ollie Steele Burden Nursing Home after a long illness. Ruth was well known throughout the insurance community through her involvement with insurance seminars on health care and Medicare. She did volunteer work at the Baton Rouge Counsel on Aging and was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church where she was a Catholic Daughter, Eucharistic Minister and a lector. She is survived by her daughter Linda Lengyel; sister Katie Smith Bordelon; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by parents John and Katie Hirschey Smith; son Dwight Lengyel; sisters Ethel Smith Austin, and Lessie Smith Austin; brothers Carlton Smith, Jerome Smith, and Roy Smith; and ex husband John J. Lengyel of Buffalo, NY. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 from 5pm until 9pm and continuing on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church from 9am until time of services at 10:30am. A private entombment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Many thanks to the staffs at Amedisys Hospice and Ollie Steele Burden Manor. Their great help and caring were invaluable. Donations may be made in Ruth’s honor to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association to support better diagnostic training for medical professionals. Contact your senators and representatives to help create better legislation for better prosecution and protection of those involved in abuse of the elderly and disabled.
