
Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Sulcer A. Harris Jr., died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006. Our Pawpaw was born Aug. 18, 1921, and was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and a retiree of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at St. Aloysius Church on Thursday from 9:30 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park. Preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Alice Falcon Harris; parents, Sulcer A. Harris Sr. and Rita Alleman Harris; and siblings, Wendell Harris and Marion Harris Jenkins. Pallbearers will be Wendell P. Harris, Bradley F. Harris, Clay M. Harris, George M. Jenkins, Jack Jenkins, Stephen M. Barnes and Adam Cruz. Honorary pallbearers are John S. Herdry, William F. Beck, Edward Desobry, Dr. Oscar A. Cruz and Art D. Henderson. A truly gifted athlete, he graduated fromBaton RougeHigh School, where he was a four-sport letterman. He excelled in football, having received All-State, All-Southern and All-American honors. He attended LSU on a full athletics scholarship, where he played tailback for two years and was centerfielder for the 1943 SEC championship baseball team. In football, he was the Tigers' leading scorer in 1941 and held the single game total offense yardage record for 29 years. He was an infantryman in the U.S. Army and proudly served in World War II. His athletic career was abruptly ended when he was wounded during the Battleof the Bulge. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his heroic service. He was the first inductee of the Baton Rouge High School Hall of Fame and a member of the Louisiana High School Athletics Association Hall of Fame. He always said his greatest accomplishment was his family and he will be greatly missed by his five children and their spouses, Allen Harris and wife Ann, Alice Harris Henderson and husband Art, Larry Harris and wife Kelley, Jay Harris and wife Laura, and Mary Rita Harris Cruz and husband Oscar. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters, Amy Desobry, her husband, Ed, and their daughter, Caitlin; Annette Geriner and her husband, Andrew; Kristin Leavell and her husband, Dave; Katrina Henderson; Bradley Harris and his daughter, Brooklynn; Brooklyn Harris; Clay Harris; and Meg, Emily, Alice and Molly Harris; and Lauryn, Adam and Katie Cruz.
