

Four scores and six years ago, Alice and Griffin M. Oby were excited to welcome their first daughter, Yvonne Rita Oby. She was adored and cared for by all her cousins and family who lived on Essen Lane in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and also in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. Yvonnne graduated from McKinley High School of Baton Rouge and in 1955, received her B.A. Degree in Mathematics from Xavier University on New Orleans. She also took courses in French and Music and was skilled on the piano from an early age. After graduation, it was her ambition to teach mathematics and assist students to adjust to their own environment through the discipline of math. Three years later, Yvonne returned to Xavier University to acquire a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Guidance. In her spare time, she tutored students free in Mathematics and Piano. In 1963, after teaching Mathematics full time for 12 years, she decided to travel abroad. Yvonne’s travels included: Portugal, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Zurich, Munich, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and London. In 1967, she moved to Los Angeles, California to teach Mathematics. Yvonne soon became a counselor and being an ambitious go-getter, she began to climb the promotional ladder from Dean of Students to Assistant Principal and finally Principal. Yvonne was a member of St. Anselm Catholic Church of Los Angeles where she served in the music ministry. She was a member of AALA, COBA and Just Good Friends Social Club. She served as a volunteer at Centinela Hospital Medical Center for several years. Yvonne was a gourmet cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends. Her specialty was “Gumbo”, a Louisiana favorite. Everyone loved her fried chicken and potato salad, especially while traveling to Palm Springs. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed sewing clothes for her nieces. She loved gardening and grew lots of vegetables and beautiful flowers. She is preceded in death by her father, Griffin M. Oby; mother, Alice Oby; and brother, Angus Oby. Yvonne leave to cherish her memory, her sister, Joyce O. Davis (Charles, beloved brother-in-law); nieces, Lynette Murphy, Carla D. Johnson (Billy), Deborah Moore (Christopher), Crystal Davis, and Kristin Moore; nephews, Charles E. Davis, Jr., DeJon Hogan, Angus Oby, Jr., and James Johnson; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, family and friends.
