

The patriarch of the Burgess clan passed from this life on September 11, 2011. Charlie Burgess lived most of his life in Old River and attended Barbers Hill schools, where he excelled at football, basketball and track.
Charlie was a self-made man who traveled the world relocating refinery units for his clients. In his later years he preferred to remain close to his family and formed Eagle Rental of Mont Belvieu.
He loved hunting, fishing, playing cards and all types of sports. During the last decade of his life his competitive juices were flowing and he began pursuing a new sport with his best friend and companion, Jean Nix. It was a team sport involving horses and cattle called team penning and sorting.
Charlie cherished his time with friends and family and loved the get-togethers in his barn for social occasions and celebrations. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Geneva, and young son, Boyd Wayne.
Survivors include his friend and companion, Jean Nix; daughter, Debbie Waldo; sons, Donnie Burgess and Ronnie Burgess and his wife Nicole; grandchildren, Hiedi, Rachael, Britt, Parker, Mackenzie, Jacob, Gavin and Nicholas; his loving sister, Brenda Wagner and husband, David; nephew, David ""Tigger"" Wagner; the mother of his children, Shirley Burgess, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Navarre Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Cedarcrest Cemetery following the service. The Reverend Everett Nix will preside.
Pallbearers will be Mike Malak, Billy Morris, Louis Andrews, Richard Shafer, Tigger Wagner and Bill Speer. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Oscar Maldonado, Dr. William H. Obenour and MD Anderson physicians, Drs. Zinner and Rice.
Donations may be made to MD Anderson in lieu of flowers.
