

Elizabeth Hayes of Baytown went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 17, 2005. She was born on July 26th 1923 in Crosby Texas to Rosie and Joseph Clawson. She attended school in Crosby and moved to Baytown in 1943 to begin working at the Texas State Employment Commission and attending Lee College. She married Armender Hayes in 1954 and continued working until the birth of their first son in 1956. She returned to work as a secretary at Robert E. Lee High School in 1970 where she served for 20 years. She enjoyed working in her yard, traveling, dancing, baking, spending time with her family, and playing with her four grandchildren. One of her favorite joys in life was the family’s annual vacation to Crystal Beach. While there, she loved to walk on the beach, and visit with her friends and family. She joined Cedar Bayou United Methodist Church in 1962 and served as an adult Sunday school teacher there for over 30 years. In retirement she continued her work in the church, at Love INC, and Baytown’s Sheltering Arms.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Emil Clawson, sisters Betty Pitts, Billie Lemmon, Ann Glass, and Esther Dean. She is survived by her husband, Armender Hayes of Baytown, son Brian Hayes, his wife Tammy and grandchildren, Chance and Madison of Baytown, son Richard Hayes, his wife Janice and grandchildren, Bailey and Cooper of Austin, sister Frances Kelly of Pasadena, brother, Joseph Clawson of Baytown, brother Martin Clawson and his wife Thelma of Houston, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, 10:00 am at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Ernest Phifer officiating. Burial will follow at White Cemetery in Highlands. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Navarre Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank the staff of Happy Harbor Nursing home where she was a resident the past 16 months and the staff at Green Acres Nursing home where she spent her final days.
