Howard Prentice Holder

Howard Prentice Holder, 100 years old, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2015 in Baytown, Tx. Prentice was born in Thurber, Tx on March 16, 1915 to his late parents, Fred and Bula Holder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Becky Renaud; sisters Ersie Carnes, Eunice Creekmore and brother, Erbie Holder.

Prentice is survived by nieces and nephews and their families, Sherrill and Carl Chaffin, Jim Walmsley and Steve Walmsley, Dwayne and Marcie Carnes, Carolyn and Jack Clay, Keith and Shelly Carnes, Cheryl and Teryl Houghton, Amy and Rob Peck, Ronnie and Betty Callaway, Robin and Jack Little, Gayle Perkins and Lance Raper.

Prentice’s father was working in the coal mines of Texas Gulf & Pacific when Prentice was born. The family later moved to Breckenridge, Tx for Prentice’s father go to work for Humble Oil & Refining Company. In 1931, Fred transferred with Humble and moved his family to Goose Creek to establish their home in this area. The children attended Goose Creek schools and Prentice graduated from Robert E Lee in 1931.

Prentice started working at the Humble Refinery in 1935 and retired in 1976 after 41 years of service. After retiring, he moved to Hemphill, Tx and lived at Toledo Bend. He spent many enjoyable years fishing and making new friends. He became involved with his new friends in a wonderful charity of collecting pull tabs and donating them to the VFW, who sold the tabs. The funds collected were used to pay for dialysis treatments for patients in need. Later, the funds collected paid for temporary housing for families of wounded veterans who were hospitalized for treatment and needed their families nearby for support.

Prentice moved to Baytown in 2008 and established his home at Remington (now Waterford).

Services will be at Earthman Funeral Home in Baytown. The family will receive friends for visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 9th, with services immediately following.

Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown.
