His knowledge of the world and events was impressive to everyone. He was once described as a "walking encyclopedia". As a boy he had several train sets and as a young man he traveled all over the country by train. He not only knew the names of all the train engines, but also, the lines where the trains traveled.
He was also very interested in all aspects of science; animals, plants, and the earth/solar system. He had collections of arrowheads, fossils, seashells, and a large collection of rocks and geodes.
But one of his greatest passions was history, with strong reverence for Texas, civil war and military history. He could recite the names of leaders, commanders, and describe battles in great detail. He once gave an impromptu 30-minute discussion on the battle of Vicksburg and drew a map of the troop movements and pointed out the combat strategy.
James was very patriotic. He loved his state and his country, and he was proud to have served in the Air Force as a Captain. He was stationed in Okinawa for two years during the Vietnam War.
James also loved traveling. He visited all 50 states, over 40 countries, and all 7 continents. He climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan, hiked up Ayer's Rock in Australia, walked a mile on the Great Wall of China, took a cross-country trip across Russia, and sailed the rivers of Patagonia.
James greatly enjoyed his profession of dentistry. He was in practice for over 40 years and had multi-generations of wonderful patients. He was honest, hardworking, and had a wonderful staff. He was kind, compassionate, and interested in his patients' lives.
He was also a spokesperson and sponsor for Amigos de las Américas, a nonprofit organization that inspires leaders through service and immersion experiences. He had many meaningful and impactful relationships through his participation and close affiliation.
James was a true Christian and man of great faith and conviction. He was a lifelong member and ardent supporter of the First Christian Church of Baytown.
Finally, James loved his friends and family dearly. He was married for over 50 years to his beloved wife, Rose Marie. He could not have been more proud of his son, John David, and his daughter-in-law, Mary. He simply adored his three grandchildren, Anna, Olivia, and James and tried to be with them as much as possible traveling to Alaska and Greece with them recently. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. Ultimately, he was a unique and wonderful man loved by all who knew him and we were blessed to have had him for 84 years.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Silas G. Moore of Baytown. He was preceded in death by his older sister Cynthia Moore.
He is survived by his wife Rose Marie Moore, his son John David Moore, daughter-in-law Mary Moore, sisters Elizabeth Moore and Melanie Ellison, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
James graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1959, Southern Methodist University in 1963, and Baylor college of Dentistry. In 1969 he served as a Captain in the Air Force until 1971, he then returned to Baytown to open his dental practice.
