John Douglas Bettis, Sr.

John Douglas Bettis Sr., 92, of Baytown was born February 7, 1916 in Mooringsport, LA and passed away Friday, February 8, 2008 in a local hospital. He was a member of Old River Baptist Church and Cedar Bayou Masonic Lodge #321 for over 50 years. He was a Merchant Marine veteran and retired from the Union Carbide Company. He enjoyed being with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Joyce Bettis and son, John Douglas Bettis Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Joy Delaine Bracey; son, Steven Lynn Bettis; grandchildren, Shari Odom; Louis and Donna Johnson, Camie and Ralph Perez, Larissa and Shane Newby, Dawn Bettis and Joshua Bettis; great grandchildren, Mindi and Randy Wentworth, Carmen Henson and Heath Lack; great great grandchildren, Emma, Holly and David Newby, Madisyn Bracey and Makenzi Wentworth and Paris Perez; cousins, Buddy and Julia Lewis and Joy Oliver; and dear friend, Gloria Ainsworth.

Masons will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be M. E. Smith, Ivy ""Frenchie"" Gould, Tom Campbell, Jim Campbell, Don Campbell and Bob Campbell.

His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Funeral services with Masonic rites will be Monday, February 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Biddy, Charlie Flewellen and M. E. Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery.
