Larry Daniel Chasteen, 80, of Austin, Texas, passed away, with his loving wife by his side, on Sunday, September 7, 2025, from Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born in San Antonio, on January 21, 1945, and was the adopted, only child of Daniel Edgar Chasteen and wife, Dorothy Marie, of Baytown, Texas.
After graduation from Robert E. Lee High School, in Baytown, Texas, and the University of Houston, it was by accident that Larry met a young lady by the name of Lynette “Lyn” Hartwick, as he was going to complain about an open door and loud music coming from her apartment, while she was housecleaning. Instead, that greeting turned into a day of listening to her Stevie Wonder and his Roy Orbison albums. Five years later, they were married on September 27, 1980, and they spent twenty days shy of their anniversary of forty-five years of a beautiful life together.
While working at Houston NASA Clear Lake, and later Prudential in Houston and Jacksonville, Florida, Larry pursued many interests during his lifetime. He enjoyed playing golf, watching George Forman and Muhammad Ali boxing matches, singing along to his huge collection of Jerry Lee Lewis’ music and his very favorite, Elvis, as Larry loved performing his impersonations. He had a passion for rock and roll piano music and taught himself how to play Jerry Lee Lewis’ piano Licks/Riffs from a tutorial. He deeply treasured treating himself to a live Las Vegas performance by the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Another side of Larry was being very attentive and particular in keeping his yard neat and healthy. He even sent dirt samples from his yard to be analyzed for the best mix of fertilizers, producing many compliments from neighbors and friends.
Larry and Lyn had no pets until a little miracle wonder came to live with them in Austin. Larry named her “Priscilla”, and her special mission was a gift of love that captured his heart forever. Soon, more feline pets were added, creating a little tribe of entertainment and joy.
Preceded in death by his parents: he leaves behind his wife Lyn to cherish his loving memory; her siblings Patricia “Patti” Ham and husband James, Mervyn Hartwick and wife Jeannie, and Randy Hartwick and wife Sharon; his aunt MaryLou and husband Clet Weaver; and cousins Peggy and husband Henry Bowdoin, Gail and husband Donald Peace, Karen and husband Mack Stanlee, Gary Chasteen and wife Pam, Carla and husband Mike Joseph; his numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Larry will be forever loved and missed.
