It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Louis Ray DeVries, who departed this world on March 23, 2026, at the age of 77. Louis, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, was born on September 6, 1948, in the vibrant city of Houston, Texas. He left us, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.
Louis was the beloved son of Patsy and Melvin DeVries, and later, the cherished stepson of Everette Russell, affectionately known as "The Old Man." He joins in eternal rest his adored wife, Julie Dianne DeVries, whose memory he held dear until his last breath, as well as his parents, stepfather, and brother, Robert "Bob" DeVries.
A devoted father, Louis’s legacy lives on through his children, Angela Sanders (Clint), Jennifer Dew (Kenneth), and Ryan DeVries (Savannah), who carry forward his spirit of warmth, curiosity, and dedication. He is also survived by his brother, Michael DeVries (Rosie) and sisters, Laura Ashley Durkin (David), Cheryl Jeffries, Pamela Russell, and Lianne Mueck (Curtis). His life was further enriched by his seven grandchildren Craig Sanders (Kaley), Blake Sanders (Hunter), Justin Folwell (Daneyda) , Jessica Folwell, Aspen DeVries, Ethan DeVries Mason DeVries and ten great-grandchildren, Paisley, Ella, Hailey, Kelton, Klayton, Aubree, Korbin, Adalyn, Jayden, and Brynnlie, who brought immense joy and pride to his days.
Louis was a man of intellect and drive, earning his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston. His career spanned from being a process operator to a fulfilling tenure as a computer programmer, a role he embraced with passion until his retirement. His work was a testament to his dedication and love for learning.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Louis found joy in the simpler pleasures of life. He was an avid car enthusiast, spending countless hours building engines and sharing this passion with his son, Ryan. A licensed pilot, Louis co-owned a plane with his brother-in-law, Bobby, and volunteered his time for Angel Flights, transporting cancer patients to treatments with compassion and care. His love for the outdoors was palpable, and he eagerly awaited deer season each year. His adventurous spirit led him to participate as a frontiersman, camping under the stars and living as American settlers once did.
Louis was a man of many talents, known for his ability to build engines and his appreciation for the great outdoors. His character was defined by kindness, generosity, and an unwavering love for his family and friends. Louis loved sweets and was always wondering if there were warm chocolate chip cookies anywhere.
A service to celebrate Louis’s remarkable life will be held on March 30, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Earthman Memory Gardens Pavilion, located at 8624 Garth Rd, Baytown, TX 77521.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to SEV Home Health, particularly Kim, and Baytown Methodist for the exceptional care they provided. Your dedication and compassion meant the world to our family during this difficult time.
