Raymond Alphonse Tavary, one of the few remaining of “The Greatest Generation”, was reunited with his Love in Heaven on Monday, November 24, 2014. Although born in Youngstown, Ohio on March 18, 1921, Raymond was a lifelong resident of Baytown, Texas.
After a tour of duty in Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands during WWII, Raymond was discharged as a MSgt. from the US Marines. During his time in the service, he met his beloved wife Mary, whom he married on December 8, 1945. Raymond was a committed man and the glue that kept everything together. He and Mary raised a family of six children during the tumultuous 1960’s, always giving their kids enough of the proverbial rope to hang themselves, but ensuring they first had the life lessons to prevent it from happening.
A devoted husband and father, he supported his family by serving the Bay Area as a tile contractor. He was also great with a saw and hammer, and enjoyed many years in his garage honing his skills as a master craftsman. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Baytown, and attended mass every Saturday. Raymond maintained his witty sense of humor and the sparkle in his eye until his last day.
Raymond is preceded in death by his wife Mary, his father and mother, Anthony and Antoinette Tavary, his brother Michael Tavary, sisters Juanita Scalise and Dorothy St. John, and his infant daughter.
He is survived by his son Raymond Tavary and wife Cappie, sons Bert and Robert Tavary, daughter Kathleen Lemon, daughter Patricia Dunno and husband Jerry, and daughter Anna Blythe and husband Randy. He is dearly loved by his grandchildren Jeremy Garrett, Jason Lemon, Jerry Lemon, Jaime McCullough, Mary Cappie Tavary, Toni Russell, Michael MacLeod, Randy Blythe, Travis Blythe, and Kirra Tavary. His great-grandchildren Haley, Logan, Lindzee, Brayden, Jack, Leo, Gabriella and Dorian were all blessed to make many memories with their Pawpaw. His sister Lolita Hubbard, brother Arthur Tavary, numerous nieces, nephews, a host of friends and his faithful dog Judy will all also greatly miss him.
Raymond and Mary are together again. Their legacy will live on in the hearts of their 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren . . . and all of this because two people fell in love.
