Rev. Mrs. Robbie Aneice Smitherman McCorkle, a native of Baytown, was born September 24, 1923, to Eugene Hartwell Smitherman and Lou Cynia Ashworth Smitherman in Diboll, Texas. She went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 21, 2017. Preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, William Franklin McCorkle; her son, William Andrew; and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Amonna Sue McCorkle Goodwin, and husband, John; her granddaughters, Karen Goodwin, Cherisse Goodwin Blachford and husband, Richard, and great-grandson Nile Blachford, and Laneice Brooker and husband, Brandon, and great-granddaughter, Elise Brooker; nieces, Donna Cates, Carol Whisenhunt, Linda Armstrong, and their families, and a multitude of cousins, friends, and their families. She also has a great legacy of spiritual children in Baytown, Ghana, and around the world.
Aneice and Franklin were united in marriage on April 8, 1945, in Baytown, Texas, at Trinity Tabernacle Assembly of God, where Aneice had been a member since she was seven years old. After starting out as a telephone operator, she entered full-time ministry in 1945 and they pastored Bay City Assemblies of God. In 1946, they received appointment for foreign missionary service and in early 1947, they set sail on an old freighter ship from New York City for The Gold Coast, West Africa, now called Ghana, where they spent many years as Bible Institute teachers, pastors, and evangelists. Upon returning to Baytown in 1978, she transitioned to role of church mother and took care of all those around - from babies to elderly; however, Aneice’s most cherished roles were friend, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Witty, she always had a ready quip and loved to tease and laugh. She loved to cook and was the consummate hostess to all, providing both physical and spiritual food to all those around her, no matter what part of the world she was in, and always with the proper table setting. Even in her last days, she was still offering candy and drinks to all her visitors, but more importantly, she continued to minister to both caretakers and visitors as the ready counselor, prayer warrior, and friend.
Our sincere appreciation to each faithful visiting friend, as well as a special thanks to Harbor Hospice and St. James House for their loving care these last few years and months.
