"There are some that bring a light so great into this world, that even after they are gone the light remains."
Shirley Jean Ford Davenport, 89, of Baytown, went home to be with the Lord on September 18, 2021. She leaves behind a legacy of love, hope, kindness, generosity, and contentment.
She was born in Wellington, Kansas on May 8, 1932 to Landis Burr Ford and Dorothy Helen Lewis Ford. She had a twin sister Beverly Ford Miller. She was a member of the Lee Brigadiers and graduated class of 1950.
She met the love of her life Ernest Malcolm Davenport, in 1950 at the Murill and Ashbel Street Church of Christ. They were married in 1951. They welcomed twin boys, Daniel and David, followed by Damon a couple of years later. They were her passion. After having 3 sons, she welcomed 6 granddaughters which pleased her immensely.
Shirley strived to have the heart of a servant. She served the kids of Baytown by working as a crossing guard for the Lamar Elementary school from 1965-1974. Then went back to college for a degree to serve as a substitute teacher in the 1980’s. She loved her family and was there for them for anything they would need. Most importantly she served God and was an example of what a godly woman should be. She spent much of her days reading and studying the Bible and teaching others. You could always find her with a smile on her face and a welcoming voice.
She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. The things she enjoyed most was being with her family, music, and teaching bible class to young and old. Shirley wholeheartedly believed in the importance of teaching kids how to memorize Bible verses. Her favorite verses that she lived by were 2 Timothy 2:15, KJV: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Also, Philippians 4:8, KJV: "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
Shirley had a love for classical music, working in her flowerbed, sewing, calligraphy writing, count cross stitch, reading non-fiction books and cooking. She looked forward to her annual Christmas Eve dinner with her family. Her signature foods were stovetop roast with mashed potatoes, gravy, and pecan pie.
In 1999, Shirley was the recipient of a kidney transplant. This beautiful gift allowed her to enjoy a healthy life for another 21 years. She truly was content in any situation she was in.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Bill Ford, and Ted Ford; twin sister Beverly Ford Miller; loving husband Ernest; and her son Damon Davenport.
Shirley is survived by sons Danny and wife Cassandra, David Davenport and wife Linda, and daughter in law Debra Jasper Davenport. Granddaughters are Wendi Montoya and husband Martin, Kayla Logan and husband Monte, Lisa Clary and husband Jeff, Erin Petty and husband Ben, Kristen Davenport, and Staci Wise and husband Wayne.
